Established in 2000, the Indonesia Council is a professional association for scholars and educators to promote and support the study of Indonesia within higher education.
Education happens within the context of a larger community. Our approach extends beyond the school to help ensure students have the necessary support to do their best learning.
Our members are drawn together by a common interest in Indonesia and a commitment to promoting the value of that knowledge through education and research in Australia and Indonesian institutions and beyond.
The Council sits within the Asian Studies Association of Australia, the peak body for university experts on Asia in Australia.

Our membership is drawn mainly from academics and students, but also includes industry and government.
We work across multiple professions, fields of expertise and disciplinary knowledge, including the language and the humanities, social and physical sciences, but also education policy, development and foreign affairs.

The Indonesia Council advocates for the advancement of Indonesian Studies in Australia and the professional interests of its members.
Through formal statements, open letters, and policy submissions, the Council engages with governments, universities, and other institutions on matters affecting the teaching, research, and public understanding of Indonesia.

The Indonesia Council Open Conference (ICOC) is a biennial, multidisciplinary conference at which scholars at every career stage present new and innovative work on Indonesia. ICOC places particular emphasis on fostering engagement between emerging Indonesianists and established scholars, and draws participants from across Australia, Indonesia and around the world.
The next ICOC will be held in Darwin, Northern Territory, from 21 to 24 June 2027. Convened by Dr Nathan Franklin at Charles Darwin University, it marks the first time the conference has been held in the Territory. Sign up to our newsletter to stay up to date.

Find Where to Study Bahasa Indonesia in Australia
Interested in studying Indonesian at an Australian university? The University Languages Portal Australia (ULPA) is a comprehensive, regularly updated resource that helps students find language courses offered by universities across Australia.
The Indonesia Council recommends using ULPA to explore the latest study options. You can search by language or university, and filter results by proficiency level and other study options.
ULPA covers all languages taught at Australian universities, but you can easily filter the database to Indonesian to see where it is currently offered, including beginner and post-Year 12 options.
